Surplus Residue
Surplus Residue highlights the work of four artists whose practices seek to negotiate excess. In the context of a world that provides too much of everything (but also too much of nothing), we are interested in how our artistic practices similarly function as footholds in response to a surplus of spectacle, contradiction, time, and desire. We each do this through our own aesthetic logic, in individualized methods of sifting through and organizing the glut of imagery that saturates contemporary experience.
In each of our practices, we gesture towards source imagery in artworks that resemble the recognizable, but upon closer inspection, provide less resolve, and more questions. They are indexical, yet vague. Despite the uncertainties presented by our work, this exhibition finds collective conviction in our kindred ability to make sense of the incomprehensible excess in our makeshift world.
